First thing: I love dramas that take place in the world of pastry, chocolate etc…Must be my food lover’s side. I love to see pretty cakes and how they are made.

But that’s not the only good point of that drama! Back then the main reason that had pushed me to watch this drama was Hyun Bin. I needed my shot of Binnie. Plus one of my friend had advised me this drama because it was, according to her, hilarious. For being hilarious it was! We have a classical rom-com with the famous love triangle (more a love rectangle here) and a love-hate relationship between the main characters. The hero is like always, a big ass (and of course a rich one!). Do I even need to mention the happy ending? Dah. But even if we follow some classic strings, this drama is unique in its genre! We are immersed in a weird world where beauty is not the priority. The making is not really aesthetic (at least compared to the drama I’m used to watch). We can see some close-up deforming the face of the actors, and hear some surprising music (the first time I heard “Be My Love” by Clazziquai I was like “What the hell is that? Am I really hearing a neigh and weird flyer saucers’ sounds in the back? > But I assure you this song is in fact super, hyper, mega cool!) while the characters are turned into ridicule. It was the first time I was confronted to toilet scenes and that was…EPIC. Well I have to confess that I wasn’t really charmed by this drama at first. It was too scatterbrain for me, who had just enter in the drama’s realm. But we come to appreciate little by litlle all those little elements. It’s actually what makes this drama so cool. When I say “where beauty is not the priority” I’m not only talking about the making. I’m also referring to the protagonist, and above all the heroine.

kim-sam-soon1Kim Sam Soon (Kim Seon A) is just like the drama: not particularly pretty and rough (at least that’s how she is presented to us). Strong personality (you should hear her talk and swear like a giant ahjuma, that’s something) and strong body (well to my eyes she wasn’t fat, but I guess Koreans have another definition of that word). She has all the characteristics a heroine should not have. We all know how looks are important in Korea and what are their beauty standard (S-Line, V-Line…). Through Kim Sam Soon’s character we have a quick overview of how this society works and sticks to their ideal. Koreans speak their mind when they think someone is a bit fat etc… In Europe it’s all the contrary. A friend won’t say that you’ve gone fat -unless he is completely tactless. While in Korea it shows that they care about you (well at least that what I’ve heard…still a bit hard for me to believe that). Thus she is constantly nagged by her family, friends and her love life knows some difficulty (well I say that but 3 men still wanted to date her! That’s not a negligible number). She is an anti heroine and that makes her very close to us. I think that’s why we get to love her so easily.

11Hyeon Ji Hyeon -played by a chubby Hyun Bin at that time *pinch, pinch gouzigouzigouzi*- is like I said the classic rich jerk of many dramas. I had a love /hate relationship with him. He is selfish, jealous, possessive and egocentric. He uses Kim Sam Soon to hurt and makes jealous his first love while on the other hand he forbids her of seeing or listening another guy. Hmm…not really fair, all that. Yet, I came to like him nonetheless. His character built some sexual tension between both characters and I have to say that it’s the best part in romance. In real life I would never allow anyoneto treat me like he did but in dramaland the rules are different and I have to admit that having a jerk as a male character, tends to add some spice to the story. It’s really hard for me to say that I liked his character cause I was completely against his way of thinking and most of the time I wanted to punch him in his face but what can I say? Eventually I was seduced by him, just like KSS. Besides he wasn’t only an ass. He also had a gentle and childish side in him. Once you managed to get through his coldness, he was really cute (and kind of a sex addict pouhaha). And when he was too much of a jerk KSS had more than one trick up on her sleeve to avenge herself (even if most of the time it was without purpose):

Just for that Hyun Bin deserves all my respect

Yu Hee Jin (Jeong Ryeo Won) is the complete opposite of Kim Sam Soon and thus a tough rival for or anti heroine. We have here a really strong love triangle. It was obvious that Hyeon Ji Hyeon and Kim Sam Soon were going to end up together eventually but Yu Hee Jin’s character played really well her part as a troublemaker. Some of her reaction really annoyed me (for example when she asked Ji Hyeon to go with her in America as a farewell trip I was like “seriously?! don’t toss granny in the begonias, girl! You are crossing the line”) and she was the protagonist the less original -well Hyeon Ji Hyeon wasn’t that original either but she was worst to my eyes (>>>SPOILER- why are diseases always used in dramas? Argh– SPOILER<<< ). I didn’t particularly like her.

Henry was the coolest guy ever. He wasn’t playing a big role but was so sweet every time he was appearing. The point that I liked about him is that he wasn’t the pathetic third wheel even though he had a one-side love with Yu Hee Jin.

This drama made me laugh my socks off! I would advise this drama to everyone. Perfect for rainy afternoon under the quilt, with a cup of tea and a cake not far from your hand reach (cause believe me this drama will make you hungry) + Bonus for the french! Hearing korean speak french is one of the cutest/funniest thing ever.
